From Blind Journalist to the Center of Baseball’s Hall of Fame: Ed Lucas’ Story Headlines 2026 David Cone Celebrity Golf Classic
Florham Park, NJ — April 27, 2026 — The Ed Lucas Foundation will host its annual David Cone Celebrity Golf Classic on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at Brooklake Country Club, 139 Brooklake Road, Florham Park, NJ, bringing together Hall of Fame players, baseball legends, artists, and supporters for a day rooted in one of the most remarkable stories in the game.
At age 12, Ed Lucas lost his sight after being struck by a line drive while playing sandlot baseball—just moments after watching “The Shot Heard Round the World.”
What followed was not the end of his connection to the game—it was the beginning.
By 1964, Lucas had built a career as a reporter and broadcaster covering the New York sports scene. Over decades, he became a trusted presence around both the Yankees and Mets, forming lifelong relationships with many of the sport’s greatest players—all Hall of Famers—including Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Ken Griffey Jr., Reggie Jackson, and Rickey Henderson.
Lucas didn’t just cover baseball—he lived it. He earned access through trust, and told the stories behind the game from a perspective few ever could.
This year’s outing reflects that journey, with a theme centered on Hall of Fame players and the relationships behind the game.
A Day Built Around Hall of Fame Legends
The 2026 event brings that legacy to life with a lineup that reflects the theme.
Participants will have the opportunity to golf and interact with Hall of Famers Rollie Fingers, Harold Baines, and Ferguson Jenkins, alongside notable names including David Cone, Julio Franco, Jim Leyritz, Rick Cerone, and Ramiro Mendoza.
Also part of this year’s event is renowned sports artist James Fiorentino, who is currently painting the official yearbook cover for the National Baseball Hall of Fame—further connecting the day’s experience to the history and artistry of the game.
